REPEAL OF ARCHITECTS ACT 1921

The Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA) strongly supports the recent recommendations of the Productivity Commission to repeal all state Architects Acts around Australia after a two year notification period.

Building Designers are qualified to design buildings, but for too long, outdated state Architects Acts have stood in the way of good economic management. BDAA represents some 1300 leading Building Designer (non-architects) in Australia. Building Designers account for 75% of all residential projects.

BDAA congratulates the government in having the foresight to implement a review of this matter. Deregulation in other industries has shown considerable economic benefits for Australia, and we feel the same will apply to Building Design/ Architecture. The BDAA looks forward to working with governments around Australia to implement the self regulation/co- regulation model as recommended by the Commission in its draft report.
